About the only interesting thing that happened yesterday was being delayed on the ground in Tucson, AZ. The weather was awful around Houston, so we spent our 40-minute ground delay holding at the end of the runway 11L. Lucky for us, the local Air Force pilots were practicing some Touch-and-Go's on the runway we were waiting to use (Navy version: Crash and Dash). My fellow pilot, Aric, and I had front row seats to a pretty cool "air show." Fortunately, that was all the flying excitement for the day!
Unfortunately, we had a condo meeting last night, and my "head-of-household" obligations took front seat to the training I had hoped to accomplish. After the meeting, I squeezed out a 5.6 mile run before I went to sleep. Definitely junk miles - one of those mental health runs. I ran pretty hard, enough to make my gut burn. I left the heart rate monitor and watch at home. It was just the warm humid air, empty streets, and some good tunes! My legs felt sore from those pesky lunges I did 4-Days ago. I actually thought my leg turnover was pretty fast, until a streetlight lit up my molasses-moving "crooked-leg" shadow!
Mentally though, it did the trick; my mind was clear and boy did I sleep well. Andrea was very sweet to let me run so late. I actually saw my friend John at the park. He was running the opposite direction at a good clip. John is probably the best triathlete in the area - the only exception possibly being the "full-time" pros. Generally, he wins everything in the area. He's a phenomonal runner and he has tremendous training discipline!
John was involved in a bike accident at the end of April, and was seriously injured. True to form though, he "willed" himself back to training, and I know he has won at least one local race since his accident. His injuries included a few broken ribs and a shoulder injury requiring steel plates. His girlfriend, Anna completed the Boston Marathon this past April. Shortly thereafter, she had surgery to remove a cancerous tumor. Read that again. Unbelievable. Anna is recovering well, and similar to John is already back in racing shape!
My friend Sean gave me some inspirational words yesterday relating to childbirth and fatherhood. I am excited to experience our childbirth and really look forward to the balance it will provide! He even said I was going to cry. Did I just write that? Thanks, Sean.
I also spoke to my long time friend Greg whose boss, Marsha, had a cancer related surgery two weeks ago. We are wishing her a healthy and speedy recovery.
Thanks again for reading. Sean also told me to "train, train, train . . . " So here I go . . .
