I have to work late in the day today, so I will not get a full day of training completed. However, I was thrilled to get an e-mail from the Ironman people early this morning announcing the replay of last year's Ironman on TV today (NBC). Since I have had to work during all the previous showings, I viewed it as both entertainment and a training opportunity.
After making Andrea some French Toast and reading some of the new Triathlete magazine, I managed to get out the door for a swim. I didn't have much on the swimming agenda, but I knew it wouldn't be a long workout because I REALLY wanted to get back to the house to watch the 2006 Hawaii Ironman replay. I managed 2000 meters in about 43 minutes. I was fairly pleased with the workout. My 100's were between 1:39-1:45. Slow for a good swimmer, but I did 20 of them and felt pretty good about the workout. I still can't/won't do flip turns. And, I still haven't shaved my legs or pulled out the Speedo yet, so shaving another 25-30 seconds off those 100 times in the next two months (and adding another 18 of them) should be pretty easy. Ha Ha.
I made it home in time and was able to get on the bike trainer for the start of the NBC special. I pedaled along while watching the stories about Kona unfold. I definitely had mixed emotions. I don't know why the race makes me want to cry. I am scared of the elements. I saw the loneliness that occurs out on the Lava fields. I can't wait to go, but its gonna really hurt. How do you look forward to that? I will think of Mary and everyone else on the "140.6 Miles of Honor" plus Andrea and our new son. There is something special there, I am looking forward to experiencing it.
KonaSpeed Blazeman.
KonaSpeed Team Hoyt.
I rode 2 hours. Nothing special. No "Jedi" mind tricks to get through it. I would have run after the ride, but in lieu of "junk"miles, I will rest tonight, go to work, and put in some quality miles tomorrow. Hopefully, I will complete a long run this Tuesday as well. The "build" is beginning!
Thanks for Reading!

So ACURA and KONA have exactly one letter in common. Thank God for IFR, huh? !!
I not much a crier (is that spelled right?), but I have to admit I cry during each Kona recap. It has to be the human interest aspect because I could care less if Norman Stadler wins or loses. . not to take anything away from him, but it IS his JOB. How can you not get emotional about Team Blazeman and the debilitating effects of ALS in only 365 days. Carpe diem.
So I was thinking about the Marine and his overcoming a couple obstacles. . .like only having one foot. It kinda reminded me of me when I was laid up after surgery. The desire to drown yourself in (his case pills and) booze when you're in that situation is complex. I guess in the short term it feels good and then it becomes habit (and then you're friggan fat and out of shape). Regardless, a small part of me could relate, but see there is one problem with ME relating to HIM. . I have all my appendages (ask the wife with the Parker House roll in the oven!!!) That boy is a S-T-U-D STUD! Anyway, I think that's why I love the Kona recap every year; there are so many people who have more cards stacked against them than the average bear and they kick butt!
So the question becomes one of perspective. How do we keep those less fortunate than ourselves in mind when we (I) wimp out every day? Dunno, but admitting the problem is half the battle.
So I got to the gym this morning, lifted weights and got on the treadmill for a run. Gotta admit that I'm so out of shape that after lifting weights, my HR was up there and I wanted to quit after one mile. But today I thought of Blazeman, the Marine w/ one foot, and of course, Mary, and thought, "Run pansey!".
What is it about Ironman to those who try to understand it?
Oh yeah, Mary. For those who may read the blog and only have Dan's word for it, Mary REALLY was that everything . . . great, cool, loving, kind, funny.. . . pick the adjective. She was that and more. We were all better having had her in our lives. I think about her and miss her every day.
I got my lunchpacked up, my shoes tied tight (I hope I don't get in a fight)~Adam Sandler.
Code for, I'm packed up and ready for the gym tomorrow. Blazeman, Marine guy, Mary. . . and Delts, you aren't too bad either.
